China’s growing influence confronts the world with a secrecy seen as a fact of life at home

중국의 영향력은 커지고 있으나 세계는, 중국 내에서 어쩔 수 없는 현실로 받아들여지는, 비밀주의에 직면해 있다.
(dawn은 새벽이라는 의미가 있지만 시작하다라는 동사로도 쓰입니다. stay는 정말 많이 사용하는 동사인데요, 여기서는 out of the sun과 짝을 이뤘습니다. keep out of the sun과 같은 뜻입니다. keep out of the grass 라고 할 때와 같습니다. 새 날은 당연히 해가 뜨면서 시작되는데 해를 거부한다니 중국 공산당엔 사정이 있는가 봅니다)

중국 국민들은 이해할 수 없고, 수수께끼 같은 당의 리더십을 어쩔 수 없는 현실로 받아들이는 것을 배워왔습니다. 높아지는 생활수준을 위해 지불한 대가였습니다. 중국을 제외한 나라들은 이런 방식과 타협하는 데 훨씬 더 애를 먹을 것입니다. (come to terms with 는 누구와 타협하다는 뜻입니다)
When China was poor and backward, its unexplained leadership convulsions caused barely a ripple outside its borders. It was fodder for China watchers. Among the most eminent of these, the Belgian scholar Pierre Ryckmans, once wrote that trying to decipher Chinese politics was like looking at “nonexistent inscriptions written in invisible ink on blank pages.”

More and more, multinational firms in China operate within an economy directed by party fiat.
