These plants absorb even more carbon dioxide from the water and the air. When a whale dies, its body sinks and takes the carbon deep into the ocean, where it can stay for hundreds of years. This is like one whale storing as much carbon as planting thousands of trees would while it’s alive. Whales help keep Earth’s carbon balance in check, both when they’re alive and after they die.
